Fascinating Secrets on a Hot Summer Night!

Danilo and I were in the bar on a wonderful summer night. I was sipping the 'bicicletta' I had ordered. They are made of white wine spiked with a splash of Campari. I was trying to decide if I was riding this particular bicycle or if it was riding me. Danilo broke into the middle of my deliberations. He held out a slender book for me to see, Alan Carr's The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

Danilo was in a confessional frame of mind. He told me he had paid €150 to go to a stop smoking group that night but he didn't want to.
Would I flip through the book and tell him what I thought of it? Some days before, we had discussed my method of quitting smoking together ...


I could see the book was direct and to the point. It stressed the fact that stopping smoking was nothing like the ordeal people saddled with a track record of numerous failures expected it to be. I said, "Yes, this is my method all right, Danilo. It is autobiography. It shows others how Alan quit smoking and he tells his readers how much he enjoyed doing it, just like I do in mine."

When it was brand new, the book was a nonfiction finalist in the Authorlink 2002 International New Author Awards Competition. In those days, the work was called Quitting Smoking Easily and for Keeps.

Then, a top-notch literary agent tried placing my book with publishers; but without success, alas! She is a superb agent, a member of AAR, the society all the best agents belong to; and we remain friends to this day. However, there was a bit of wound-licking in it for me because Mary Sue could not convince her editor friends to print my little book. Then suddenly it dawned on me how much better it would be to offer my book as an Ebook to upload online – It would solve a lot of problems: printing, distribution, plus making the book available instantly instead of torturing smokers hungry for success with a long and costly wait!

Seconds after you buy it, the book will appear on your monitor where you can read it in peace, or print it out on paper for less than the cost of a pack of cigarettes! Then a fiend, cunningly disguised as another literary agent sent me the following E-Mail, brutal as it is:

Okay, maybe I fooled the agent, well at least I never heard from him again...

My intention is to provide you with the opportunity to realize the dream you have had of being the nonsmoker you once enjoyed being. The main thing I'd like you to bear in mind is how senseless it is to put yourself under any kind of pressure. How many times have you sworn to yourself you would quit smoking? Pressuring yourself to stop simply doesn't work, so why waste your time?


Quitting smoking for good is not a set of quit smoking tips, it is not a trick, it is no act of will but consists of granting yourself enough faith in your own spontaneity, your native abilities and your self-interest (think of all the things you used to love that you’ve given up during the time you smoked– they’re just too much trouble anymore, now aren't they?)! You can have them all back again. Patches, gum, smokeless cigarettes, all the other crutches people think they need are actually ways of telling yourself you cannot do it on your own; to replace cigarettes with something else is like trying not to think about elephants, and the worst is yet to come:

Being like somebody else is will make you better? It is a regretable mistake because smoking actually makes you worse. Mistakes tie intimately into your smoking habit! Smoking is self-deception and that is all there is to it. PERIOD! What really matters is you, your ability to live and love. To stop is to answer to the question, what on earth is out there, what is in my mind that can possibly stop me from being me?
